Dr Thomas Jones

As Secretary to the Cabinet, Thomas Jones (‘TJ') served under four Prime Ministers and he was well connected within Wales . After graduating from Aberystwyth he moved to Glasgow and there came into contact with the work of Charles Rennie Macintosh. TJ and his wife were arts and crafts devotees and filled their home with hand-made furniture, silver, enamels and pottery. He met Gwendoline and Margaret Davies at their home in Llandinam in 1910. Jones became their closest friend and confidant. In the years 1917–1920 Gwendoline was considering the possibility of setting up a rural centre for Art and Crafts at Gregynog Hall for the rehabilitation of soldiers and those affected by the war. TJ was pivotal in the sisters' plans for Aberystwyth and Gregynog. It is likely that through his friendship with the sisters that Jones was instrumental in persuading the University to establish the Art Department and Gallery of Crafts in 1918.
