Sculpture / S14 Richard Roberts, Inventor1904 Bronze mm. Richard Roberts (1789-1864) was born in Carreghova, Montgomeryshire. He invented the screw-cutting lathe and the first successful gas meter; his firm, Sharp, Roberts and Co. made railway locomotives and invented an automatic spinning mule. Despite his success in invention, Roberts was not a shrewd businessman and died in poverty in Manchester, 16th March 1864. |
