Francis Chantrey , Sir

Born: 1781, UK, England, Sheffield, Norton   Died: 1841, UK, England, London

Sir Francis Chantrey (1781-1841) was arguably the leading sculptor of Regency era Britain. Having established a large studio of his own, Chantrey made his name in 1811 with his bust of radical politician Horne Tooke. His first large-scale sculpture in marble was one of George III, which earned him an influx of commissions. Other well known pieces include busts of William Wordsworth and Sir Walter Scott. Chantrey was knighted in 1831 and on his death in 1841 left his entire fortune to the Royal Academy.
