Lithography in the 1920s

Woodcuts, wood engravings and lithographs are not represented with the same consistency as intaglio prints throughout the period. Molly Bernard Smith, the proprietor of the 21 Gallery who helped so many young etchers at the start their career, was also Secretary of the Senefelder Club — founded in 1908 for the promotion of fine art lithography. From 1920 she hosted their annual exhibitions at the 21 Gallery.

The University's one-guinea annual subscription for lay membership starting in 1925 entitled the Gallery of Crafts to receive one subscription print by a Club member each year. This set of prints includes some of the most avant-garde examples of contemporary printmaking to find their way into the collection during the inter-war years: Gerald Spencer-Pryse Boardship, James Fitton May Day (1928), Celia Bedford French Fisherwomen (1930), F. H. Spear Circus Horses (1933) and W. F. Colley The Bull (1936).
