Photographs

The decision to form a collection of photographs within the continuing history and development of printmaking came at a time when many British museums and galleries were still coming to terms with the notion of photography as an art form. The 1970s had witnessed an unprecedented interest in the history and practice of photography-from private galleries, public museums and publishers. The first significant group of contemporary Welsh photographs was purchased in 1986. The holdings of post-war photography in Wales consists principally of bodies of work by individual artists, and a small number of photographs by British photographers who have shown in Wales.

The outstanding collection of Italian post-war photographs has been built up by the then Keeper Alistair Crawford. Through contacts established on personal research projects he negotiated for important collections of work by several eminent 20th-century Italian photographers including Elio Ciol, Mario Giacomelli and Carlo Bevilacqua. In 1990 a unique opportunity presented itself to acquire a rare group of vintage prints by many of the key exponents in the history of Italian photography from c.1910 to the 1960s, all of whom by then had died. Photographs by Guiseppe Cavalli, Ferrucio Leiss, Paolo Monti, Toni del Tin consolidated the University's existing holdings of Italian photography and the School of Art now holds the most important collection of post-war Italian photography outside of Italy.
