Christopher Webster: Visions and Traces

20 February – 12 May 2006

Exhibition of work by Christopher Webster.

Exhibition of work by Christopher Webster.

Following on from the processes explored in his recent touring exhibition Cipher, this exhibition brings together a variety of Chris Webster's experiments and explorations of media such as prints, photographs, collages and objects. Underlying these works is the exploration of the mysterious inclinations and suggestions of the unconscious; evocations of the mysterious and the visual tradition of the occult.

Webster’s work makes use of found and/or manipulated materials and their re-configuration as iconic substitutes. In these spaces the presence of the real becomes an evocative story-telling medium, an updated Grimm’s fairytale, where the photograph/object as memento mori merges with the suggestion of other presences.

Johannes G. 2005

“And now we come to the Heart of our Designe: the art of Shaddowes you must know well…and you must be instructed to Cast them with due Care. It is only the Darknesse that can give trew Forme to our Work and trew Perspective to our Fabrick, for there is no Light without Darknesse and no Substance without Shaddowe (and I turn this Thought over in my Mind: what Life is there which is not a Portmanteau of Shaddowes and Chimeras?).”
