1794 Aquatint with etching, hand coloured in sepia watercolour, on cream wove Whatman paper
128 x 194 mm. Miss E.C.Livesey, Southsea, Portsmouth?
Book illustration from William Sotheby's 'Tour through parts of Wales' of 1794. 'Thee, Snowdon! King of Cambrian mountains hail!' enthuses Sotheby. Smith captures the impressive scene as the text portrays it. The clouds have receded and the sunlight catches the open planes, whilst the deep cracks are thrown into darkness and for Sotheby, 'the fair face of heaven and earth appears'
Picturesque mountain landscape; foreground, field with bushes; middleground, church, cattle, two figures and a bridge over a small lake; background, rugged mountains, the Snowdon range. Dust-ground aquatint with etching and sepia watercolour wash. No evident plate mark. The paper has a watermark which reads 'J.WHATMAN'
