Display artist/maker:

Sabina Teuteberg

Born: 1947, Switzerland, Zurich

Ceramicist. Teuteberg originally trained as a fine artist with a specialism in textiles. After working as a teacher of arts and crafts for about eight years she saw an exhibition of contemporary British ceramics including work by Janice Tchalenko, Jacqui Poncelet and Jill Crowley in 1977. The exhibition inspired Teuteberg to give up teaching and move to the UK to study ceramics at the Croydon School of Art and Design, then setting up a workshop in London in 1982.

Teuteberg makes a range of functional and colourful tableware using the jigger and jolly method as well as large scale items. Coloured clays are first inlaid into the slab surface to create simple, strong patterns, and the clay is then formed into dishes, plates, and cups. The fine art training Teuteberg received in Zurich gave her a thorough grounding in colour theory and her choice of colours in her work influences the patterns. She is a fellow of the Craftsmen Potters association and lives in Leicestershire.
