Display artist/maker:

Richard Batterham

Born: 1936, UK, England, Surrey, Woking   Died: 2021

Ceramicist. Batterham first began potting at Bryanston School under the direction of Donald Potter, and his work reflects the influence of his two-year apprenticeship with Bernard Leach at St Ives (1957-58). He is particularly noted for his skilled throwing often on a large scale using a Korean kick-wheel.

Batterham made functional pottery including bowls, jugs, casseroles, and teapots as well as handsome jars and boxes. Using only minimal decoration, the work is finished in a range of subtle glazes including ash, semi-matte celadons as well as salt glaze. He had a strong individual philosophy and was highly regarded by professionals and students as a “potter’s potter”.
