Ewen Henderson

Born: 1934, UK, England, Staffordshire, Cheddleton   Died: 2000

Ceramicist. Born in Staffordshire, he studied painting part-time and worked for a timber company in Cardiff, South Wales. Between 1964-1968 he became a full time student first at Goldsmiths College and then at Camberwell College London where he was taught by Lucie Rie, Hans Coper and Ian Godfrey. He moved increasingly towards ceramics and sculpture. Influenced by ancient Mediterranean cultures as well as early modernist sculpture he soon abandoned making traditional thrown forms preferring hand-built irregular shapes. He was known for his patchwork technique of assembling his pieces from different types of clay e.g. porcelain, terracotta, bone china which created different effects in the firing. He is noted for his large irregular shaped vessels but also for his tea bowls inspired by Japanese and Korean traditions which he made from the 1970s. Throughout his career he explored clay as a medium in its own right and described his way of using it as three dimensional drawing
