Display artist/maker:

Patrick Sargent

Born: 1956, UK, England, Northampton   Died: 1998, Switzerland

Ceramicist. Known for his important contributions to the modern studio pottery movement, Sargent studied at West Surrey College of Art and Design, Farnham, in the late 1970s under Paul Barron and Henry Hammond. Having worked in England and travelling to France and Germany for work, he settled in Switzerland in 1986.

Much of Sargent’s creative inspiration came from the ancient Far Eastern technique of long, slow, wood-stoked firing, known as anagama. Described as an ‘old fashioned potter’, Sargent worked the clay with his feet, threw on a simple Korean momentum wheel and used the minimum of glazes, preferring to allow the effects of fly-ash in his wood-fuelled kiln to create the fluid finishes to his pots.

Sargent enjoyed walking in the forest near his Swiss home and his appreciation of nature, freedom and directness informed his work. He was a demonstrator at the International Ceramics Festival in Aberystwyth in 1991. Sargent, along with a team of helpers, constructed a large wood-firing kiln. The tea bowl in the collection was fired during the event.
