Display artist/maker:

Anne James

Born: 1937, UK, Northern Ireland, Belfast

Ceramicist. She attended Belfast College of Art specialising in Pottery and Printed Textiles and later attended Hornsey School of Art. She set up her first pottery at Churcham in Gloucestershire where she first made stoneware domestic pottery and then porcelain. Ethnographic collections of ceramics and textiles and archaeological artefacts have been a great influence on her work. She is interested in the subtlety of ageing and used or worn surfaces, particularly of Indian embroidery, which she collects. It is something of these qualities that she tries to attain in her work. Characterised by a delicacy and softness of form, her resin lustre processes are built up in layers, to create a depth of overlapping colours which can take up to five firings. She sprays the pots with coloured slips, body stains and oxides and uses sponge printing techniques. She is a fellow of the Craft Potters Association
