Display artist/maker:

Mary Rogers

Born: 1929, UK, England, Derbyshire, Belper

Ceramicist. Rogers studied graphic design at Watford School of Art (1945-47), calligraphy at St Martin’s School of Art, London (1947-49), and ceramics at Loughborough School of Art (1960-64). She worked for several years as a calligrapher before establishing her own workshop in Loughborough, Leicestershire.

Initially she made chunky coiled stoneware pots resembling carved stones. By the 1970s she became excited by curling and crumpled forms and thought porcelain would be best suited to make these shapes. From then on, she concentrated on small porcelain pinched bowls.

Rogers wrote ‘Mary Rogers on Pottery and Porcelain’ (Watson-Guptill Publications, 1979). Her work is inspired by nature, owing at least in part to her keeping of natural history collections since childhood. Rogers retired from ceramics production in 1991.
