Alfred William Hunt

Born: 1830, UK, England, Liverpool   Died: 1896, London

Painter. Son of the artist Andrew Hunt and father of the writer Violet Hunt (1866-1942). Studied at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, 1848-52, where he won the Newdigate Prize for English. A fellowship extended his stay at Oxford to 1861 after which he worked as a painter in London. He was elected a member of the Liverpool Academy in 1854, of the Old Watercolour Society in 1864 and exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1854 and 1857. He painted detailed, atmospheric landscapes of Britain, France and Switzerland, mainly in watercolour. His work was praised by Ruskin who probably influenced his career move from literature to painting
