Display artist/maker:

John Glick

Born: 1938, USA, Michigan   Died: 2017

Ceramicist. He trained in metal smithing and ceramics at Wayne State University (B.F.A., 1960) and Cranbrook Academy (MFA 1962). During his national service (1962-1964), he experienced salt glazed potteries in Germany. On his return to America he founded Plum Tree Pottery where he still works. In the early years he produced simple undecorated stoneware dinner services and functional ware to order. Towards the end of the 1960s he became more interested in the formal and decorative qualities of 18/19th century Japanese art including Oribe pottery and Ukiyo-e wood block prints and he began to introduce these qualities into his work. He began to make large plates and long boxes to facilitate his growing concern with surface design. He uses a combination of wax resist patterns, translucent glazes, incised lines and stamped textures. Since the 1990s, he has also made wall panels based on landscape. The work was acquired when John Glick was a demonstrator at the International Ceramics Festival, 1995
