Margaret Frith

Born: 1943, UK

Ceramicist. Margaret Firth wanted to become a dancer but was encouraged by her parents to go to art college. she trained at Bolton, Liverpool and Stoke-on-Trent Colleges of art and did teacher training at Manchester (1959-1964). She became a full time potter shortly afterwards with her husband David Frith, whom she met at Stoke-on-Trent. Together with her husband, they established a business in Wales, producing oxidised stoneware and employing a number of assistants. In the mid 1970s the Friths moved their home and workshop to an old millhouse now Brookhouse Pottery. They used locally sourced clay including waste by-products from local factories to make domestic reduced stoneware, decorated with wax resist and glaze-trailed decoration. Since the 1980s she has been able to concentrate on her personal work which consists of delicate porcelain bowls with carved or painted floral motifs and celadon glaze
