St Ives Pottery

   Active: 1920-

The Leach Pottery in St Ives, Cornwall was established by Bernard Leach on his return from Japan in 1920 with Shoji Hamada. Leach (1887-1979) was a most important and influential artist potter of the twentieth century. His pottery in St Ives drew many makers, including Michael Cardew, Harry Davis, Cecil Baugh, Katharine Pleydell Bouverie, Warren MacKenzie and many others who worked as apprentices.

Although most only stayed about two years, the knowledge they had gained at the pottery led them to start their own workshops, teach and travel, and so pass the ‘Leach Legacy’ worldwide. After Leach’s death in 1979 his wife Janet Darnell and later Trevor Corser continued the pottery until 2005.

The site was renovated and restored over the following three years before reopening to the public in 2008 as a working studio pottery, museum and gallery. There are two exhibition areas at the pottery - the Entrance Gallery with work by Bernard Leach, Janet Leach, David Leach, Shoji Hamada, William Marshall, Michael Cardew, and Kenneth Quick, and the Cube Gallery, which hosts a changing exhibition.
