Verwood Pottery

   Active: c1260-1952

The term “Verwood Pottery” in fact refers to a collection of potteries in the East Dorset area of England which can be traced back to Damerham in 1260, Alderholt in 1337 and Verwood proper, where the last kiln closed in 1952. Methods of production were largely unchanged from Roman times, with processes being carried out with no mechanisation of electrification. Wares were made from the local clay and fired in a wood-burning kiln, giving them their distinctive glaze.

The demise of the Verwood Pottery began when rail transport made lighter enamel ware from the Midlands more widely available, and heavier pottery from the likes of Verwood became less desirable. Demand for products from the pottery continued to decline during the twentieth century until the last kiln in operation at Crossroads Pottery closed in 1952.
