Lancashire Slipwear

Born: UK, Lancashire

Pottery. The earliest slipware was produced by the Romans but it reached its greatest popularity during the reign of Charles II (1630-1685). It is earthenware pottery, both for domestic use and decoration, decorated with a liquid clay, usually of a different colour, known as slip. The slip is trailed in fine lines or dotted over the plate or other surface to create patterns or images of figures, birds and fantasy animals. Feathering and marbling were also carried out using slip.
