Michael Eden

Born: 1955, UK, England, Lancashire, Blackburn

Eden studied Art at Blackburn College of Technology and Design (1972-74) and 3D Design at Leeds Polytechnic (1974-75). In 1981 he established a pottery with his wife, Vicky, in Kendal, Cumbria. Together they produce contemporary functional slipware with simple proportions – strong, inventive shapes and bright colours.

In 1987 they moved within Cumbria to Hale, where they continue to run courses in ceramics as well as producing their own work. During the 1990s the Edens made study trips to Hungary, Portugal, and France, researching contemporary slipware for their co-written book ‘Slipware, Contemporary Approaches’ (A & C Black, 1999).

In 2001-02 Michael and Vicky curated the touring exhibition of slipware ‘The Snake in the Garden’ which opened in Aberystwyth. In 2005 Michael was awarded the Donald Potter Prize from the Conran Foundation, and from 2006-08 studied an MPhil at the Royal College of Art.
