Marcelle Hanselaar

Born: 1945, The Netherlands, Rotterdam

Painter and printmaker. Studied initially at the Royal Academy of Arts, The Hague, 1962-64, but dropped out and worked instead as an artist's model before travelling for seven years across India and Asia. The artist moved to London in 1979 where she still lives and works. Etching is the art form in which Hanselaar has demonstrated considerable talent, and she thought of as one of the most accomplished printmakers working in Britain today. Although often infused with a certain mordant humour, much of Hanselaar’s work comes across as an uncompromising exploration of human relationships. Her latest portfolio of 30 prints, The Crying Game, is a passionate response to the present day violence and the urgent question of moral complicity. Hanselaar's works are held, amongst others, by the British Museum Prints & Drawings Collection, London; the V& A Prints & Drawings Collection, London; the Ashmolean Prints & Drawings Collection Museum, Oxford; the Whitworth Museum & Art Gallery, Manchester; and the Fitzwilliam Museum Prints & Drawings Collection, Cambridge.
