Giovanni Battista Piazzetta

Born: 1682, Italy, Venice   Died: 1754, Italy, Venice

Painter, illustrator and designer. Also known as Giambattista Piazetta. Piazzetta began his career as a woodcarver under his father, Giacomo, but soon abandoned the family profession to study painting under Antonio Molinari (1655-1704). Around 1703 he moved to Bologna to work under (1665-1747), and in 1711 returned to Venice where he would remain for the rest of his life. His work began in the Italian Baroque fashion of the 17th century, but evolved over time to a mature Rococo style. Piazzetta created a great number of religious and pastoral works, and was also the first director and teacher of nude drawing at the Venetian Academy in 1750.
