Karl Weschke

Painter. Weschke was born and raised in Germany, but lived in the UK from 1945 onwards. He was mainly self-taught, but enrolled in a Cambridge University extramural course in ‘the nature and language of art’ whilst being a prisoner of war in Radwinter near Saffron Walden in 1947. He attended a course in sculpture at St. Martin’s School of Art, and sketched the dance classes of Vera Volkova in Covent Garden. He knew the artists of the Borough Group and was involved with the St. Ives artists through fellow painter Bryan Wynter (1915-75). His early works were influenced by German Expressionists and artists such as Goya and Velazquez. When he moved to Cornwall, his style became more akin to that of the local artist community. He created landscapes and figure paintings, concentrating on the female nude in the 1960s and ‘70s. His images were held in dark colours and suggested violence, isolation and vulnerability. The colour palette changed to lighter tones when he travelled to Egypt in the 1990s; impressions of that country were incorporated in his pictures. He was awarded the German order of merit in 2003, and the Tate St Ives held a retrospective exhibition of his works in 2004.
