Marcus Thomas

Born: UK, Wales, Wrexham

Ceramicist. Born near Wrexham, Thomas studied at Cardiff Institute of Higher Education and has since taught at Yale College, Wrexham. In 1994 he won the Gold Medal for Craft at the National Eisteddfod. His work is influenced by the domestic objects in everyday life, familiar items which are part of his Welsh upbringing.

His most noted ceramic work was produced in the mid 1990s when he was using slip-casting and transfer printing to make everyday objects such as jelly moulds or chairs used in installations evoking a Welsh heritage and identity. Based on mass produced items, in fact, each work is individually made and decorated.

In 1995, Marcus Thomas undertook an 'artist intervention' project with staff and students in the School of Art at Aberystwyth to exhibit his work along with other material from Ceredigion Museum and the Aberystwyth collection. The two chairs with associated objects are part of this installation.
