Peter Wray

Born: 1950

Painter and printmaker. Studied at Goldsmiths, London, and Leeds Metropolitan University. Initially trained as a painter but extended his practice into printmaking in the early 1970s. Due to his background in painting and the fact that he is largely self-taught as a printmaker, his work integrates painterly methodology and it is this that results in his distinctive style. His work over recent years has investigated the concept of the personal ‘journey’ in terms of geography, chronology, narrative and spirituality, and, above and beyond the journey itself, has focused on the notion of the ‘starting-point’ and the ‘journey’s end’ as elements of reflection within his own experience and resulting philosophy. He is a four time national prizewinner and his work has been exhibited widely both in Britain and abroad, including the USA, Australia, Russia and Japan. Wray is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (RE), and teaches regular courses in printmaking from his studio in Stockton-on-the Forest, York.
