Claude Mellan

Born: 1598, France, Abbeville   Died: 1688, Paris

Printmaker and painter. Son of an ironmonger. Known to be working in Paris by 1619 but later moved to Rome, 1624-36, where he received tuition initially from Francesco Villamena (c.1566-1624) and then from Simon Vouet (1590-1649), c.1624-26. Back in France he established himself as a respected engraver working in Aix-de-Provence on a map of the moon for Claude-Nicolas Fabri de Peiresc (1580-1637), and, from 1642 in Paris, where he became a successful portraitist with sitters including members of the Bourbon royal family. He created tone by varying the thickness of lines, dispensing with cross hatching. His portrait of Christ, 'Sudarium of St Veronica' of 1642, is made from a single continuous spiral line. He also produced a number of paintings many of which are now lost
