John Hamilton Mortimer

Born: 1740, UK, England, Eastbourne   Died: 1779, London

Painter and printmaker. Son of a businesman and mill owner. He was a pupil of Thomas Hudson (1701-1779), 1757-59, and Robert Edge Pine (c.1730-1788), 1759, but also attended St. Martin's Lane Academy and Shipley's Art School in London. He was a close friend of Joseph Wright of Derby (1734-1797) and received the patronage of Dr. Benjamin Bates of Little Missenden, Buckinghamshire. In 1764 he was appointed a Fellow of the Society of Artists of Great Britain serving as President from 1774 until 1778 when he joined the Royal Academy. He painted portraits and conversation pieces and a few paintings in the Romantic style the latter often featuring banditti. However, he is probably best known for his series of 12 published etchings of Shakespearean characters. He died after an attack of fever at the age of 38
