Lawrence Alma Tadema , Sir

Born: 1836   Died: 1912

Painter. Born in the Netherlands as Laurens Tadema. Later changed his name to the anglicised ‘Lawrence’ and affixed his middle name ‘Alma’ to his surname so that it would appear higher in alphabetised catalogues. He studied at the Royal Academy of Antwerp in 1852, where he won several prestigious awards. His work was first exhibited in 1852 to much critical applause, and by 1862 he had his own studio in which he dedicated his career to creating art. He took a hiatus from painting in 1869 following the death of his wife, but during his sabbatical he met Laura Theresa Epps and fell in love, allowing him to pursue his artistic career once again. He went on to innovate a new numbering technique that made it difficult for forgers to pass off unoriginal works. He continued to enjoy success into his later years, despite a slow decrease in his artistic output. He became one of the 19th century’s wealthiest painters, and was knighted in England in 1899. However, after his death in 1912, his work was largely ignored due to being left behind by the drastic changes taking place in the art world. His work would not be rediscovered and appreciated again until the 1960s.
