Vicky Shaw

Born: 1962

Ceramicist. Shaw studied at Staffordshire University and was awarded a BA (Hons) and subsequently an MA in Ceramic Design. Following postgraduate study she became a Research Fellow in the School of Art & Design, Ceramics Department at the University of Wolverhampton with a specialism in Ceramic Printing. In 1998 Shaw became a part-time lecturer at Wolverhampton, teaching on the BA Ceramics course.

She is noted for her work with porcelain finishes and as a pioneer for developing screen-printing techniques on ceramics. In 2001, following a project with Wedgwood to develop Jasperware, she created a range of work which offered a new interpretation on a 200-year-old tradition of making. In 2006 she worked with the ceramic collection at Aberystwyth, selecting items by other makers who have used printing techniques and that created conversations with her own.

Vicky Shaw has worked in industrial environments in the United States and Germany, focusing on surface pattern. In 2007 she was one of twelve artists chosen to represent the UK at the 4th World Ceramic Biennale in South Korea and was awarded a Diploma of Honour in the ‘Ceramics in Use’. Interpreting utility in a broad sense, Vicky Shaw chose black basalt clay as the base material and the form of three nested bowls as the basic form for her exhibit.
