Jenny Beaven

Born: 1950

Ceramicist. She received a BA in Ceramics, Manchester Polytechnic in 1973 and a Certificate in Teaching at Cornwall in 1986. Since then she has taught at many schools and art colleges. Her work is inspired by landscape and environment, in particular the china clay mining areas of Cornwall and Bodmin, where she now lives. Influenced by environmental artists such as Richard Long and Andy Goldsworthy her work draws on the sensory experience of landscape and usually take the form of low reliefs and sculptures. Actual substances including minerals from disused mines, beach sands, pebbles, plants and glass are incorporated into porcelain and china clay to create textures, marks and scarring. Sometimes forms are cut up in cubes and reassembled into ceramic collages. A residency at the china clay firm, Imreys Minerals, between 2001-2 proved to be the beginning of an on-going working relationship and developed her exploration of water-formed patterns and shapes. She has been a member of the International Academy of Ceramics since 1990 and has exhibited internationally with work represented in museum collections worldwide.
