Alexander Nasmyth

Born: 1758, UK, Scotland, Edinburgh, Grassmarket   Died: 1840, Edinburgh

Painter, illustrator and engineer. Studied under Alexander Runciman (1736-1785) at the Trustees' Academy in Edinburgh and in the London studio of Allan Ramsay (1713-1784), 1774-78. He then returned to Edinburgh where he made a living as a portraitist - one of his sitters being his friend the poet Robert Burns (1759-1796). He toured Italy between 1783 and 1784. He later turned to landscape and is regarded as a seminal artist in developing a Scottish landscape tradition. From 1798 he ran his own art school from his studio in Edinburgh. He also painted theatre sets and designed tunnels, bridges and gardens. His son Patrick Nasmyth (1787-1831) was also an artist
