Lynne Allen

Born: 1948, USA

Printmaker and art educator. Studied at Kutztown University, Pennsylvania, 1970-72, University of Washington, Seattle, 1973, Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten, The Hague, Netherlands, 1975, and the University of New Mexico, 1986. Allen also trained as a Master Printer in Fine Art Lithography at the Tamarind Institute, 1982, where she later served as Educational Director. Thereafter she taught as a Professor of Art at Rutgers University, 1989-2006, before taking up her present post as Director of the School of Visual Arts at Boston University. Allen's work is centered upon an investigation of the identity and history of Native American Indian culture, particularly focusing on the impact upon that culture of Western power and influence. Allen is herself a descendent, on her mothers side, from members of the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Recent work includes mixed media pieces incorporating inscriptions, prints and stitching on Native Indian articles such as moccasins, sheaths and blankets
