William Mulready

Born: 1786, Ireland, Clare, Ennis   Died: 1863, London

Painter and illustrator. Son of a leather-breeches maker. His family moved to Dublin and then on to London in 1792. He entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1800 and became a pupil and brother-in-law to John Varley (1778-1842). In 1815 he was elected an associate of the Royal Academy and was awarded a Legion of Honour for his work submitted to the Paris International Exhibition. He initially painted historical pieces and landscapes, particularly cottages, but then turned towards images of contemporary life using light colours over a white ground. He also worked as a drawing master, a painter of theatre sets and as an illustrator the latter including work for Goldsmith’s 'The Vicar of Wakefield'. His sons Paul Augustus (1805-64), William (1805-78) and Michael (1807-89), all of whom were raisded by Mulready after a divorce, were also painters
