Samuel William Reynolds

Born: 1773, UK, England   Died: 1835, UK, England, London, Bayswater

Mezzotint engraver, painter and gardener. Studied in London under Charles Howard Hodges (1764-1837) and John Raphael Smith (1752-1812). Reynolds' first engraved portrait was of a young George III, still Prince of Wales, dated 1794; years later, in 1820, King George III would appoint Reynolds his portrait engraver and drawing-master to the royal princesses. He was also employed by Turner to work on his Liber Studiorum. In addition, Reynolds exhibited a variety landscapes and other subjects at the British Institution and the Royal Academy from 1797 onwards. Of his children, Samuel William Reynolds Jr. (1794-1872) was also a noted engraver and painter, and his daughters Elizabeth and Frances were both skilled miniaturists
