From 1885 he drew many famous posters, with his poster 'Tournée du Chat Noir' becoming one of the defining images of the Art Nouveau era. He later drew many posters opposed to the First World War, and published much of his work under pseudonyms to avoid political repercussions from his harsh portrayals of society's ills.
