Jacques Philippe Le Bas

Born: 1707, France, Paris   Died: 1783, France

Engraver. Le Bas was brought up in poverty with very little education but at the age of 14 joined the studio of Antoine Herisset (1685-1769), a mediocre architectural engraver. He largely educated himself through the study of 17th century engravings such as those of Gerard Audran, but also received lessons from Nicolas-Henry Tardieu (1674-1749). In 1729 he was commissioned to engrave 'St John the Baptist Preaching to the Multitude' (Paris, Louvre) after Pier Francesco Mola (1612-1666). This engraving was well received and Le Bas's raised profile enabled him to open his own studio in 1733. He developed remarkable technical skill and taught well known artists such as Cochin (1715-1790) and Jean-Michel Moreau (1741-1814). He became a full Academician of the French Royal Academy in 1743, and left over 300 works of graphic art. He is regarded as one of the most distinguished French engravers of the eighteenth century
