William Woollett

Born: 1735, UK, England, Maidstone   Died: 1785, UK, England

Draughtsman and engraver. Woollett was apprenticed to John Tinney (c.1706–1761) in London, and studied at the St Martin's Lane Academy. He is noted for his plates after Richard Wilson, 'Niobe' (1761) and 'Phaethon' (1763). His plate "Death of General Wolfe" (1776) after Benjamin West is generally considered his masterpiece. In 1775 he was appointed engraver-in-ordinary to George III and he was a member, and for several years secretary, of the Incorporated Society of Artists
