Leopold Flameng

Born: 1831, Belgium, Brussels   Died: 1911, France

Painter and printmaker. Moved to Paris in 1853 where he studied under Luigi Calamatta (1802-1869) and was especially noted for his engraving of 'La Source' after Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (1780-1867). His works were exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1859, and he received a gold medal at Brussels in 1869 and the Medal of Honour in 1866. He was also an officer of the Legion of Honour. In 1878 he was awarded at the 'Exposition Universelle' and became a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1898. He was father of the French academic painter Francois Flameng (1856-1923) and was a teacher of Paul-Adolphe Rajon (1843-1888)
