Display artist/maker:

John Absolom

Born: 1815, UK, England, Lambeth   Died: 1895

Painter and printmaker. Developed artistic skills from an early age, and began painting portraits in oils aged 15. He exhibited for the first time at Suffolk Street Gallery aged 17. Studied in London then Paris, 1835-39, after which he returned to London, abandoned oil for watercolour and joined the New Watercolour Society. Here he served as Secretary for several years. He focused on scenes of rural life, and often his paintings were engraved by others. He did, however, make some original etchings, most notably a series illustrating the months of the year for The Playmate in 1847. They are celebrated by the way he achieved tonal effects through the use of line, without using aquatint
