James Archer

Born: 1823, UK, Scotland, Edinburgh   Died: 1904, UK, England, Surrey

Painter. Son of a dentist. Studied in Edinburgh at the Royal High School, the Trustees’ Academy, and the life school of the Royal Scottish Academy. Here he attended classes from1840-52, became an associate in 1852, and an academician in 1858. As a signatory to the Report on the Conduct of the Life Academy, he was involved in the future direction of the academy, stressing the importance of drawing over composition and colour. His own work reflects this. Although he began as a portraitist, he increasingly turned to biblical and literary subjects under the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites. In 1860 he moved to London and became interested in the legend of King Arthur. In the 1880s he travelled around the USA and India mostly painting portraits characteristic of their vibrant use of colour. His paintings can be recognised by the monogram JA transfixed by an arrow
