Display artist/maker:

Henry Hugh Armstead

Born: 1828, UK, England, London   Died: 1905, UK, England, London

First trained by his father, then at the Government School of Design at Somerset House and later at private art schools. He began his career working for the silversmiths Hunt and Roskell, but in the late 1850s focused more on sculpture. His marble sculpted friezes of major cultural figures on the Albert Memorial in London helped establish his reputation. Throughout the 1860s, he carved a large number of public statues, funerary works and illustrations on wood. In the Queen’s Robing Room at Westminster Palace, he carved 18 oak panels that illustrate the legend of King Arthur. In 1875 he was elected Associate of the Royal Academy, and became a full member in 1880
