Frank Henry Temple Bellew

Born: 1828, India, Cawnpore   Died: 1888, USA, New York, Brooklyn

Illustrator and writer. Son of a British officer. Lived in India, France, England and New York City where he began his career in 1850 making caricatures and illustrations for various well-known publications of the time. In 1864 his caricature of Abraham Lincoln was published in Harper’s Weekly, which proved very popular. He was also the first artist to portray ‘Uncle Sam’, referring to America, in human form, which appeared in New York Lantern in March 1852. In 1866 he wrote and illustrated his book The Art of Amusing. Bellew was a prolific artist whose wit and vitality earned him popularity that enabled him to work as an illustrator for over thirty years
