Charles Henry Bennett

Illustrator and caricaturist. Not trained in the arts, Bennett was originally a shoemaker. He began his artistic career contributing to the comic journal Diogenes, which ran from 1853-55. He continued making illustrations for other comic journals such as Illustrated Times, Comic News and joined Punch in 1865 with his series ‘Essence of Parliament’. He often made satirical caricatures of public officials, and is recognised for dressing animals up as people. He also wrote many illustrated children’s’ stories, including his own version of Aesop’s Fables. He died in poverty in 1867, aged just 38, having acquired some degree of celebrity, although his large family was left unprovided for
