John Alexander Harrington Bird

Born: 1846, UK, England, London   Died: 1936, UK, England, London

Painter and illustrator. Studied in London, intending to join the military, but instead turned to art and attended the RA schools. Moved to Montreal, Canada in 1875 where he became Director of Art for the Board of School Commissions and exhibited at the Royal Canadian Academy. Became an associate member in 1880. In 1885 moved back to London where he painted for the Royal family and exhibited five works at the Royal Academy. His subject matter focuses on horses and equestrian scenes, mainly working in oil and watercolour. He also illustrated a number of publications. Several engravings were published after his work, most notably ‘The Queen’s Race Winners’, a series of 13 portraits of racehorses. He is often esteemed for his ability to capture the movement of horses, although not as highly regarded as some of his contemporaries
