Jan van Goyen

Born: 1596, Netherlands, Leiden   Died: 1656, Le Hague

Painter. Pupil of various artists in Leiden and Hoorn and of Esaias van de Velde (1587-1630) in Haarlem. He travelled to France, 1615-16, and worked in Leiden until settling in Le Hague in 1632. He was made head of the Painters Guild in La Hague in 1640. He painted monochrome landscapes, seascapes and scenes of rural life, often with low horizons, which were usually developed from sketches made on his travels. He became near bankrupt after losing money in a tulip speculation in 1637
