Display artist/maker:

Randolph Caldecott

Born: 1846, UK, England, Chester   Died: 1886, USA, Florida, St. Augustine

Illustrator and painter. Son of an accountant. Studied at The King's School, Chester and night school at Manchester School of Art. Enjoyed hunting and drawing animals from an early age which feature heavily in his illustrations for weekly magazines. His first drawing was published in the Illustrated London News in 1861, the year he left school. Moved to Manchester in 1867, finding success in other London publications, particularly London Society. He often submitted witty captions to accompany his drawings. Lived in London from 1872-9, where he befriended George Du Maurier and other Pre-Raphaelite artists. Elected a member of the Royal Institute of Watercolour Painting in 1872, and first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1876. From 1877 until his death he maintained a successful career in children’s book illustration, achieving international fame by 1884. Although not technically outstanding, he remains highly regarded for his sensitivity and profound understanding of childhood through his own experience of illness
