Marshall C. Claxton

Born: 1813, UK, England, Bolton   Died: 1881, UK, England, London

Painter. Son of a Wesleyan Methodist minister and father of illustrators Florence and Adelaide Claxton. Studied at the Royal Academy under John Jackson from 1831. First exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1832 and exhibited a further 30 paintings throughout his lifetime. Travelled to Italy 1837-42, Syndey 1850-4, and Calcutta 1854-8, during which time he earned various commissions, particularly in Sydney. In Italy he developed a style for large narrative and historical oils, which earned brief popularity. He is known for his portraits of important academic and religious figures. During the 1860s, many of his Wesleyan and Methodist subjects were made popular as prints
