Painter. Son of engraver George Cooke. Displayed skills in engraving from an early age, with particular interest in marine subjects. Made regular visits to the Netherlands between 1837 and 1860, indulging his love of 17th Century Dutch marine artists and the light of the coastal landscape. His successes awarded him associate of the Royal Academy in 1851 and he went on to travel Europe, particularly Venice.
