Edward Henry Corbould

Born: 1815, UK, England, London   Died: 1905, UK, England, London, Kensington

Painter, illustrator and sculptor. Son of painter Henry Corbould who prepared designs for new stamps. Studied under Henry Sass and as a student of the Royal Academy. He worked primarily in watercolour in a style marked for its bright colours and theatrical lighting, for which he won several gold medals from the Society of Arts. Exhibited regularly at the New Watercolour Society, 1837-98, his ‘Plague of London’ winning a competition to decorate the new Palace of Westminster. Following his father’s footsteps, he also created designs for new stamps. In 1842, Prince Albert bought his ‘Woman Taken in Adultery’, and in 1851 he was appointed Instructor of Historical Painting to the Royal Family. Around 1871 he terminated his Royal services and supported himself by making illustrations for books and weekly magazines
