Display artist/maker:

Franz Edmund Weirotter

Born: 1733, Austria, Innsbruck   Died: 1771, Austria, Vienna

Painter, draughtsman and printmaker. Studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, 1751-55, and in Paris with German engraver Johann Georg Wille (1715-1808), who encouraged plein air landscape drawing. Weirotter received a scholarship at the French Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture which enabled him to spend time in Rome, 1763-64, where he met Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717-68). He created etchings based on his travels in Italy; the faithful rendition of landscapes, antique ruins and architecture was secondary to him for the sake of the ideal combination of these elements. In 1767, he was made professor of landscape drawing at the newly founded school of engraving at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.
